Edward Abner and Peter A. Drury joined together to form the Abner and Drury Company in 1898. They officially became the Abner-Drury Brewing Company in 1901. The brewery was located in the area known as the “foggy bottom” district in Washington D.C. Their signature brands of beer included Old Glory, Royal Pilsen, Friar and many others. In 1917, alcohol was banned in the District of Columbia, so the brewery shut down. This was two years before the 18th amendment was ratified. Many breweries switched to producing soft drinks during prohibition. Peter A. Drury became the president of Merchants bank during that time. He incorporated the business as the Abner-Drury Company in 1920 and began bottling beverages shortly thereafter. When prohibition ended in 1933, Abner Drury went back to brewing beer. The business went bankrupt in 1935 and closed in 1936. The brewery was reorganized under the Washington Brewery name but closed for good in 1938. |
