The Windisch-Muhlhauser Brewing Company on the west side of the Miami-Erie Canal, Cincinnati was a joint venture of Conrad Windisch, and Gottleib, and Heinrich Muhlhauser. Their brewery was better known as the “Lion Brewery” because of the two lions that rested atop the brewery’s gables. The lions weighed 10 or 12 tons each and were brought over from Germany.
The partners built a huge complex at Liberty and Central Parkway, with multiple buildings and several levels of underground lagering cellars, that eventually covered a couple of city blocks. Relationship amongst the three partners was more than business. While Gottleib and Heinrich were the Muhlhauser brothers; Christine Windisch, Conrad’s sister was married to Gottleib. Conrad was previously a partner in the Moerlein & Windisch Co. with Christian Moerlein. Their Central Parkway & Liberty Street brewery was established in the year 1866, right after Moerlein bought out his partner of 12 years. More famous for the design, the building was conspicuously crafted – in the massive style of the Romanesque Revival. Inside, the storehouse was grand, unfathomable, and 42 feet in depth; and divided into two stores capable of holding 30,000 barrels. At the time it was probably one of the most spectacular breweries one could have laid eyes upon.
In 1882, the brewery was renamed as Windisch-Muhlhauser Brewing Co. Conrad Windisch died on the July of 1887. Gottlieb Muhlhauser was the president thereafter. He continued until his death in 1905, when Henry Muhlhauser replaced him as president. The co-founders of the Lion brewery are still listed as the prominent brewers of their time, Christian Moerlein being their strongest competitor.
The 1919 prohibition stalled the production as it did for many other breweries. The buildings got another life, and more were added, when Burger Brewing operated on site from 1934-1973. As progress marched on, most of the original Windisch-Muhlhauser buildings were demolished, save for a portion of the original brewhouse that fronts the Cincinnati Ballet’s training facility, and for one of the stables, now part of Chatfield College.
