Extra info In 1890, Canadian pharmacist and chemist John J. McLaughlin of Enniskillen, Ontario opened a carbonated water plant in Toronto. McLaughlin was the oldest son of Robert McLaughlin, founder of McLaughlin Carriage and McLaughlin Motor Car. In 1904, McLaughlin created "Canada Dry Pale Ginger Ale"; three years later the drink was appointed to the Royal Household of the Governor General of Canada, and the label featuring a beaver atop a map of Canada was replaced with the present Crown and shield.
When McLaughlin began shipping his product to New York in 1919, it became so popular that he opened a plant in Manhattan shortly thereafter. After McLaughlin's death, the company was run briefly by Sam. P. D. Saylor and Associates who bought the business from the McLaughlin family in 1923 and formed Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc., in New York.
Canada Dry's popularity as a mixer began during Prohibition, when its flavor helped mask the taste of homemade liquor. In the 1930s, consumer demand soon outgrew the production capacity of the New York City plant and Canada Dry expanded worldwide. The '30s saw the introduction of Canada Dry's Sparkling Water, quickly followed by tonic water, collins mix and other fruit flavors as mixers. From the 1950s onward, the company introduced a larger number of products.
Norton Simon took an interest in the company in 1964, and it merged with Simon's other holdings, the McCall Corporation and Hunt Foods, to form Norton Simon Inc. Dr Pepper bought Canada Dry from Norton Simon in 1982. In 1984, Dr Pepper was acquired by Forstmann Little & Company, and Canada Dry was sold to R. J. Reynolds' Del Monte Foods unit to pay off acquisition debt.[citation needed] RJR Nabisco sold its soft drink business to Cadbury Schweppes in 1986. Today, Canada Dry is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, which was spun-off from Cadbury Schweppes in 2008.
In 2008, Cadbury Schweppes became part of Grupo Peñafiel in Mexico. Soon after, Canada Dry, along with Dr Pepper, Snapple and Schweppes began to be sold there

The Canada Dry Corp., famous for its ginger ale, took to the skies in 1940 to promote a soft drink that it hoped would challenge Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola for market supremacy.
The company chartered Akron-made airships from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to tout Spur, a brand-new cola drink that wasn’t actually brand new. The dark, sweet product had been around for five years, but shoppers hadn’t really noticed. Canada Dry couldn’t settle on a slogan for Spur, floating such ideas as “It’s a Finer Cola,” “Zip in Every Sip” and “The Cola Drink with Canada Dry Quality.” It introduced an advertising mascot named Zip, a balloon-headed boy with a shock of sparse hair.Spur was sold in 8-ounce bottles for 5 cents and 28-ounce bottles for 15 cents. In Northeast Ohio, it was bottled in Cleveland at the Distillata Co. “If Spur catches on, the company hopes to get the nickel bottle into filling stations, drug stores and soda fountains,” a market analyst wrote in 1939.
While ginger ale remained popular, Spur fizzled out in the early 1960s.
In 1979, Spur Products Inc., a subsidiary of Canada Dry, reintroduced “New Spur Cola” in New York City. The new formula had only 0.14% caffeine, so Spur’s advertising slogan became “99% Caffeine Free, 100% Delicious Cola Taste.” The company pulled the plug on advertising a year later.
